Helping Children & Teens Heal and Grow

Growing up isn’t always easy. Children and teens face challenges that can feel big changes at home, pressures at school, friendship struggles, or emotions that seem too big to handle. At Playful Roots Therapy, we create a space where kids and teens can feel seen, safe, and supported while learning new ways to cope and thrive.
Every child and teen deserves a place where they can express what’s happening inside without fear of judgment. Therapy provides that space—a place where healing and growth can take root.
The Language of Play
For children, play is more than fun—it’s communication. Through play therapy, kids can express emotions they may not yet have words for. Toys, art, sand, and storytelling become their language, helping them share feelings of worry, sadness, anger, or fear in ways that feel natural and safe.
Play therapy helps children:
- Build emotional regulation and coping skills
- Strengthen self-confidence and problem-solving abilities
- Improve relationships at home and school
- Develop resilience after loss, change, or trauma

A Safe Place for Teens
Adolescence is a time of growth, independence, and self-discovery—but it can also bring confusion, stress, and self-doubt.
Many teens struggle with anxiety, depression, or feeling “not good enough.” Therapy gives them a private, judgment-free space to talk openly and find healthy ways to manage emotions and relationships.
Some teens prefer conversation; others express themselves through art, journaling, or sandtray work. Each session is tailored to the teen’s personality and needs. Tamra integrates trauma-informed approaches such as CBT, DBT, and EMDR to help teens process experiences, reduce anxiety, and strengthen self-awareness.
Common reasons teens come to therapy include:
- Anxiety and overthinking
- Mood swings or sadness
- Anger and frustration
- ADHD or focus challenges
- Family transitions or loss
- Low confidence or identity struggles

Parents as Partners
At Playful Roots Therapy, parents are essential partners in the process. Parent involvement is a required part of every child’s care plan because research shows that kids make the most progress when caregivers are informed and engaged.

Parent consultations are built in to:
- Share insights on your child’s progress
- Teach positive parenting tools
- Strengthen family communication
- Ensure consistency between home and therapy
When parents and therapists work together, children feel more secure—and lasting change takes root.
Support for Teen Athletes
For student athletes balancing sports, school, and life, the pressure to perform can feel overwhelming. Tamra combines her background as a NASM Certified Personal Trainer and Track & Field Coach to help teens build resilience, regulate stress, and maintain mental well-being alongside athletic goals.
